AUSTIN – Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick today met with the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association (TTARA) at their annual meeting in Austin to discuss the current and future outlook of the Texas energy industry and its economic impact to the state.

“In Texas, one of our greatest economic opportunities continues to be the successful development of the country’s most significant oil and gas reserves,” Craddick said. “With consistent daily output of about 2.4 million barrels over the last year, Texas has proven our state provides the best environment in the world for sustainable energy production. Our state’s oil and gas industry has met market challenges through transformational change that is keeping energy affordable with homegrown oil and natural gas and shaping new domestic industries with the emergence of LNG export terminals along our coast. Texas’ energy future is looking brighter than ever before.”

TTARA is a non-profit organization of businesses and individuals from a range of economic sectors and activities in Texas who are interested in state and local fiscal policies, and the way those policies impact the state’s economy.

bayouland-conservatory-logoHouston, TX – Bayou Land Conservancy and the Spring Creek Nature Trail are competing for funding against 11 other trail projects across the country through the Michelob Ultra “Go The Extra Mile” Campaign. Established by Michelob ULTRA, in partnership with the American Hiking Society, the “Go The Extra Mile Fund” is on a mission to restore local trails in communities across the country. Now through November 26th, Michelob ULTRA is donating a portion of every case sold with the goal of raising and distributing up to $200,000 between 12 deserving trail restoration projects.

Spring Creek Nature Trail is part of the evolving Spring Creek Greenway project: the longest contiguous, urban-forested greenway in the country which defines the border between Harris and Montgomery County. The Spring Creek Nature Trail will be an 11-mile natural surface multi-use trail extending from the George Mitchell Nature Preserve in The Woodlands east to the Montgomery County Preserve in Spring. Bayou Land Conservancy is executing a grant from Texas Parks & Wildlife to blaze new trail and restore overgrown, informal trails for recreational use. The funds raised through the Michelob ULTRA campaign will contribute to the construction of this future trail.

Says Executive Director Jill Boullion, “Public participation is vital to our success with this campaign. Votes determine what percentage of the overall funds are donated to this local project. We’re confident that Houstonians are going to step up and help us win!” Voting goes through November 26th and can be accessed at http://www.michelobultra.com/theextramile.html

About Bayou Land Conservancy: Bayou Land Conservancy is a community-sponsored land preservation organization working to permanently protect land, with a focus on the 13 watersheds that feed Lake Houston. The Spring Creek Greenway is the longest contiguous urban forested corridor in the nation. Now close to 80% complete, it will ultimately be thirty-three miles long and cover more than 12,000 acres. Bayou Land Conservancy preserves river and bayou corridors, other properties with significant wildlife habitat value and places where family recreation can occur in harmony with nature. Our “No Child Left Inside” education program connects tomorrow’s conservation leaders with nature today.

RRC Remediation of Abandoned Oilfield Site Helps With Development of Turtle Bayou Nature Preserve

AUSTIN -The Railroad Commission’s Site Remediation section has helped turn an historic, abandoned oil field site into part of one of the state’s newest natural habitats-the Turtle Bayou Nature Preserve. The 511-acre preserve, which celebrated its grand opening Friday, is located between Houston and Beaumont in Chambers County and borders Lake Anahuac and Turtle Creek Bayou.

railroad-commissionThe preserve is part of the Turtle Bayou Oil Field discovered in 1952, which had legacy abandoned oil wells and former oilfield waste pits. The abandoned oil wells were plugged using $487,000 from the RRC’s Oil & Gas Regulation & Cleanup Fund, which is financed by industry fees for plugging abandoned wells and remediating abandoned oilfield sites. An additional $49,793 from the OGRCF and a $176,300 federal Brownfield grant also was used by RRC Site Remediation to assess the site and ensure it was cleaned up to standards necessary for wetland habitat.

The Commission’s Brownfield Response Program restores Brownfield properties in communities across Texas by increasing the redevelopment potential of abandoned oil and gas sites. The RRC BRP provides technical and financial support for redevelopment with little to no cost to local governments, non-profit organizations, tribes, universities, school districts and economic development corporations through a brownfield grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The preserve is owned by the Chambers-Liberty Counties Navigation District, for preserving coastal habitat and protecting water quality. Galveston Bay Foundation holds a conservation easement on the property to permanently protect the land, which provides opportunities for hiking, birding and kayaking.

“Agriculture is a staple of Texas that reaches every corner of the state and offers tremendous opportunities for economic growth,” Sen. Cruz said. “Unfortunately, it’s clear that Texas farms, many of which are small businesses, have felt the ill effects of the Obama administration’s onerous regulations and weak economy. We must stand with Texas producers and continue to work toward solutions that lighten the burden imposed on America’s farmers, enabling them to do what they do best: create jobs, spur economic expansion, and feed the nation.”
