Texas is home to the nation’s largest road network, but the state is still struggling to meet the transportation needs of its growing population and business community.
In this month’s issue of Fiscal Notes, the Comptroller’s office takes a look at how Texas funds its congested roadways, which left drivers in the state’s largest metropolitan areas stuck in traffic for 52 hours in 2015.
“Additional revenues recently approved by voters will help us build new projects and address some urgently needed repairs, but the state still faces a hefty challenge in ensuring safe and reliable roadways for a growing economy that is attracting new Texans every day,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said. “We’ll need a considerable financial commitment to keep our traffic flowing as well as it does today.”
Fiscal Notes is an extension of the Comptroller’s constitutional responsibilities to monitor the state’s economy and estimate state government revenues. It has been published periodically since 1975, featuring in-depth analysis concerning state finances and original research by subject-matter experts in the Comptroller’s office.
