Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to Offer Cottage Food – Food Handlers Class

In 2013, a bill was passed in Texas allowing the sales of homemade foods, also known as cottage foods. This law opens up opportunities for individuals wishing to go into the cottage food business, but requires individuals to have a food handlers card.
A food handlers course accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services is being offered by Texas AgriLife Extension Service – Fort Bend County. The 2 hour class will focus on safety practices such as personal hygiene, cross contamination and time and temperature control to ensure that food is safe throughout the preparation process. The class will also include types of food allowed to be sold and proper labeling and packaging of food. The class is scheduled for Friday, August 21, starting at 9 a.m. at the Extension office at 1402 Band Road, Rosenberg.
To register for the course, call the extension office at 281-342-3034. Registration can also be done in person the day of the course. The cost is $20.00 per person and must be paid in full before the course begins.
