On October 1, 2016, two of Houston’s most prominent history organizations, The Heritage Society (THS) and Houston Arts and Media (HAM), will merge under The Heritage Society banner. Both organizations are dedicated to celebrating, sharing and preserving Houston’s rich historical legacy: The Heritage Society, headquartered in Sam Houston Park, was founded in 1954, while Houston Arts and Media has been active since 2005.
By combining administration, fundraising and outreach efforts, the expanded organization will be able to develop more extensive, ambitious and engaging educational programs, including multimedia projects and exhibits that preserve and celebrate the stories, places and things that make up our local and regional identity.
Alice Collette, THS Executive Director, says to expect exciting new things in the coming months, beginning with an upgrade to the Houston history exhibit in The Heritage Society Museum. Former HAM director Mike Vance will join the staff at THS to continue producing his award-winning documentaries, videos and web content on the history of Texas and Houston. “There is so much more to come”, Vance says. “As successful as we’ve both been in the past, this merger will make us even better. We hope you find this prospect as exciting as we do!”
All involved see this as a winning combination for all those who love the history of Houston and Texas.
