URBAN HARVEST FRUIT TREE SALE IS ONE MONTH AWAY,

SATURDAY, JAN. 13, 2018

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Urban Harvest hosts its 18th Annual Fruit Tree Sale on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s sale takes place at a new location: the Houston Community College West Loop Campus, 5601 West Loop South. Gardeners can shop for more than 100 varieties of fruit trees that are adapted to grow in the climate and soils of the greater Houston area, including selections suitable for large areas, small spaces and container gardening. New varieties this year include the coffee tree, the chocolate persimmon, the Marseilles fig and the moringa, a tropical tree known for its edible leaves that are high in Vitamin C.

In addition to the fruit trees for sale, this year’s event will feature the Green Thumbs Education Pavilion sponsored by MicroLife, with nutritional and environmental activities for kids of all ages from The Bee Lady/Bee2Bee, Citizens Environmental Coalition, Harris County Flood Control District and The Health Museum. Information on fruit tree care and planting will also be available in the pavilion, as well as expert advice from Dr. Bob Randall at the Urban Harvest tent.

Shoppers should also expect live music, food trucks, a drawing for a free fruit tree and a “Buy To Donate” program. This program is a great way for shoppers to give back to the community: all donated trees will be distributed at area farms and gardens. Individuals who make a $250 donation to Urban Harvest between now and Dec. 31, 2017, will receive access to a fruit tree pre-sale site; benefits include the first chance to select fruit trees before the sale and curbside service on Jan. 13, 2018.

The event — the largest single-day fruit tree sale in the country — is also a fundraiser for Urban Harvest, benefiting many vital programs including outdoors classrooms at schools, donation gardens that supply fresh food to soup kitchens and food pantries, an extensive curriculum of affordable organic gardening classes and the popular Urban Harvest Farmers Market at Eastside.
