HGAClogoAdditional police units will be on the streets during the holidays.

HOUSTON – The Houston-Galveston Area Council is beginning the third year of its Regional DWI Task Force, which consists of 12 law enforcement agencies throughout the Houston-Galveston area.  The DWI Task Force will be operating throughout the Thanksgiving holiday to reduce the number of instances of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).  The Task Force is funded through a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), providing overtime funds for agencies to provide enhanced DWI enforcement during holiday weekends when there has traditionally been more alcohol-related traffic incidents.  Since its inception in 2012, the Task Force made 986 DWI arrests.

Convicted first-time DWI offenders can pay a fine up to $2,000, serve six months in jail, lose their driver’s license for up to a year, and pay an additional $3,000 to retain their license once they get it back.  Safety officials say other costs associated with an impaired driving arrest and conviction can add up to more than $17,000 for bail, legal fees, court appearances, court-ordered classes, vehicle insurance increases, and other expenses.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2014, 333 people died in DWI-related incidents throughout the region. These figures represent 54 percent of the region’s motor vehicle fatalities.

“Thanks to our partnership with these participating law enforcement agencies, we hope to ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe holiday,” said Jeff Kaufman from H-GAC.  “If you choose to drink, appoint a designated driver or arrange for a ride home.”

Green Groups Join Forces to Benefit Houston Food Bank

WHAT:   More than 66 Young Professionals representing several Houston nonprofits kicked off the holiday season at the “Greens for Goods” mixer to benefit the Houston Food Bank. Most all were from “green groups,” which were asked to bring either five canned goods or to donate $5 to the cause, which helped net $245 and lots of food for the Houston Food Bank’s busy holiday season.

For the price of admission, party-goers received free 8th Wonder beer, dessert bites and drink specials at the Owl Bar. It was the first joint meeting of these YP groups, which should lead to future partnerships supporting environmental causes. The lively crowd spent the evening on the patio enjoying the cool fall weather and learning about new ways to get involved in Houston’s growing environmental community.

Organizations with YP groups participating in “Greens for Goods” include: Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Galveston Bay Foundation, the Greater Houston Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers, Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, Memorial Park Conservancy and Trees for Houston, in addition to the Houston Food Bank.

Medicare aims to cover the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program

ymca_blk_cmyk_r [Converted]Announcement to fast track coverage made in November, Diabetes Awareness Month

HOUSTON – After results of a government-funded study revealed that the YMCA’s evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) could save the federal government a substantial amount of money, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced earlier this month that it wants to fast track the process of establishing medical coverage for the program – including in the Katy area. Coverage could come as early as 2018.

This is the first time a preventative service pilot funded by the CMS’s Innovation Center has proven to reduce cost and lower cases of Type 2 diabetes.

Nearly 7,000 Medicare beneficiaries who were at high risk for developing diabetes participated in the pilot that tracked their progress in the YMCA’s DPP from 2013-2015. The average weight loss per person was 11.7 pounds one year after participation – a clinically significant loss of weight, according to the CMS. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that Medicare could save an average of $2,650 for each person who participates in the program.

The American Diabetes Association reports that $1 of every $3 Medicare dollars is spent on diabetes care. People with diabetes and prediabetes cost the country $322 billion a year.

While most recent statistics show that 29 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes, 86 million adults, including at least 22 million people ages 65 and older, are prediabetic. Prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

Research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown that programs such as the YMCA’s DPP can reduce the number of new cases of Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent overall, and by 71 percent in adults over the age of 60.

The YMCA’s DPP, which was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the NIH, is the largest provider in the nation. It is offered at approximately 1,000 YMCAs – eight in the Houston area – and has helped Americans lose an average of 5 percent of their body weight, significantly reducing their chances of becoming diabetic, according to the CMS.

As of February, the YMCA’s DPP has served more than 42,000 people across the country.

Some insurance carriers currently cover the YMCA’s DPP, which can vary in cost. Participants learn how to cook healthy foods in a variety of sumptuous ways and how to create a balanced plate, among other helpful lessons. The program’s ultimate goal is to help participants reduce their body weight by 7 percent and to increase physical activity to 150 minutes a week.

Qualified participants in the YMCA’s DPP at the Monty Ballard YMCA at Cinco Ranch must be at least 18 years old and have a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater or 22 for Asians. In addition, participants must qualify with a blood glucose level in the prediabetes range, a prediabetes diagnosis from a physician, or a self-assessed score calculated from risk quiz that can be accessed at the following link: www.ymcahouston.org/links/ydppquestionnaire.pdf.

To confirm eligibility, please contact the YMCA of Greater Houston at 713-758-9152 or diabetes.prevention@ymcahouston.org for more information.

HOUSTON STORY:

It was only a matter of time for Carrie Felder Stokes. The 56-year-old retiree was overweight, battled high blood pressure, and her bloodwork showed she was quickly on her way to becoming diabetic.

Most recent statistics show that 29 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. An estimated 86 million have prediabetes, and Stokes is one of them.

Having spent more than $7,000 on various diet programs and special foods over the years, Stokes all but gave up on efforts to improve her health. “I knew that I needed to do something, but I just had a hard time getting motivated,” she said.

After coming across a flier about the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), Stokes signed up last year for the 25-session program.

The YMCA is the largest provider of this evidence-based program, which was developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Now one of approximately 42,000 people in the nation who have completed the program, Stokes has lost 20 pounds, her blood pressure has dropped from 140/100 to 124/76, and her Hemoglobin A1C values – which determine a person’s risk for Type 2 diabetes – are now significantly lower.

“I made friends with people who had similar concerns and we were able to exercise together and encourage each other to remain healthy,” said Stokes, who has participated in a 5K race, a golf tournament, organized a neighborhood walking group and has gotten hooked on Zumba classes offered at the YMCA.

The YMCA began offering the program, which is taught in Spanish at some locations, in 2011 to help reduce diabetes in communities across the country, said Lharissa Jacobs, director of Community Health for the YMCA of Greater Houston.

The program is available at eight YMCAs in the Greater Houston area. It is open to the public and financial assistance is available.

“The YMCA’s DPP is a community-based lifestyle improvement program. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing Type 2 diabetes,” Jacobs said.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Eating too much sugar does not cause diabetes, but being overweight is a risk factor.
  • People with prediabetes may not have any symptoms.
  • An estimated 86 million Americans ages 20 years or older have prediabetes.
  • Of those 86 million Americans, 89 percent have no idea they are at risk for diabetes.

Rover Oaks Delivers Thanksgiving Turkeys for the Homeless Animals Staying at CAP

thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-1Houston, TX – (November 22, 2016) – The shelter animals at Citizens for Animal protection got to enjoy a special Thanksgiving treat today from their friends over at Rover Oaks Pet Resort!  The animal-loving staff at Rover Oaks spent the week roasting turkeys at their Houston and Katy resorts and, to help celebrate Turkey Day, they hand-delivered the tasty treat to the animals who are spending the holiday in the shelter, awaiting their forever homes.  The adoptable dogs and cats enjoyed their meal and are ready for you to come and meet them and their furry friends, all of whom would be most thankful for a happy, safe and loving home for the holidays!

In 2007, Rover Oaks began serving homemade Thanksgiving turkey to the dogs and cats staying at their pet resorts. Joy Lee and Steve Smith, co-founders of Rover Oaks Katy, then decided to expand the service five years ago to include pets at the shelter. Lee, a long-time volunteer for CAP, says, “When you see the loving care that our clients give their pet companions each day, it breaks your heart to know that thousands of wonderful shelter pets won’t enjoy that same happiness this Thanksgiving. We wanted to do something special for the pets at CAP and give them a holiday treat too.”

thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-7 thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-6 thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-5 thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-4 thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-3 thanksgiving-at-animal-shelter-2

The staff at Rover Oaks put a lot of effort and love into this annual project. “It is so rewarding to be able to brighten the holidays for these loving animals,” said Steve Smith. “We strongly encourage everyone to visit the animals at CAP and consider adopting, volunteering or donating to this great organization.”

Since opening in 2006, Lee and the staff at the Katy facility have helped CAP find homes for hundreds of dogs, many receiving full makeovers and, in some cases, training to help prepare them for a successful adoption. View a full album of the special event here: http://bit.ly/2foPNwb.

New Jordan Ranch Names Lifestyle Director

jordan-ranch-winnifer-washingtonEven before the first resident has moved in, Jordan Ranch has hired lifestyle director Winnifer Washington. Washington has already started planning resident events, kicking off with a neighbor meet-and-greet at Brick & Mortar Kitchen.

“We have people from all of the Houston area moving to Jordan Ranch, but this was a good central location for our first event,” she said. “Everyone enjoyed meeting their soon-to-be neighbors.” Having studied nutrition at Baylor University, Washington happened into recreational event planning by chance, starting first as a fitness manager at a gym and then as a neighborhood recreation coordinator. She most recently directed activities at a senior living community in Sugar Land.

“People would think that our events were rather sedate, but we had a great time,” she said. The chance to start a lifestyle program in a Johnson Development community was appealing. “Johnson Development has a reputation for world-class amenities, great ideas and a focus on really helping people — who wouldn’t fall in love with that,” she said. Washington said she is excited about the possibilities for an active lifestyle in Jordan Ranch, as well.

“You don’t see kids outside as much now,” she said. “I hope to help families become engaged in healthy living.” Washington currently offices out of model homes in Jordan Ranch, switching between the eight models builders have opened in the development.

Building in Jordan Ranch are David Weekley Homes, Highland Homes, J. Patrick Homes, Newmark Homes, Perry Homes, Plantation Homes and Westin Homes. Home prices in Jordan Ranch start in the $250,000s. Now under construction in the community, located one mile south of Interstate 10 and Fulshear, is a recreation center that will offer residents a freeform pool, lazy river, splash pad, dog park, clubhouse and fitness center, which is slated to open next year. The pool complex is expected in 2018. Jordan Ranch is a project of Johnson Development Corp. For more information, visit www.jordanranchtexas.com.

cornyn‘I dare say there’s probably not a family in America that doesn’t have to deal with this in some way or another, either at work, people you go to church with, people who live next door. Some way or another, mental health problems are rampant.’

‘It’s really important that we deal with this in a sensible way, and this legislation helps to do that.’

WASHINGTON – In remarks on the Senate floor today, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke about the importance of reforms to our mental health and criminal justice system included in the 21st Century CURES Act bill that will be voted on by the House of Representatives later today. The reforms are based largely on his Mental Health and Safe Communities Act. Excerpts of his remarks are below, and video of his speech can be found here.

“I’m particularly glad that this legislation includes bipartisan mental health reforms that I introduced in this Chamber last year known as the Mental Health and Safe Communities Act. I want to express my gratitude to Senator Alexander and Senator Murray and others on a bipartisan basis and bicameral basis for working with us to make sure we include mental health reform as a component of the 21st Century CURES legislation.”

“I dare say there’s probably not a family in America that doesn’t have to deal with this in some way or another, either at work, people you go to church with, people who live next door. Some way or another, mental health problems are rampant.”

“We are warehousing people in jails and other places and not giving them the treatment they need in order to get their basic underlying problem taken care of.

“So what this legislation does is provides a pathway to treatment, primarily by using preexisting appropriations to make grants to our states and local communities so they can deal with these using the very best practices in the country.”

“Doesn’t it make sense to prioritize dealing with this, these mental health problems, and particularly with the best practices in places like San Antonio, Texas, where the mental health community and law enforcement and other leaders have come together to try to come up with a program to divert people with mental illness to treatment and to provide additional training to law enforcement to deescalate some of the conflicts that occur?”

“It’s really important that we deal with this in a sensible way, and this legislation helps to do that.”

“This also, Mr. President, provides families additional tools.”

“One of the things this legislation does is provide an additional procedure called Assisted Outpatient Treatment, which gives local courts, civil courts, the authority to consider a petition.”

“It provides family members another tool when their loved ones become mentally ill and when there are no good options for the family members to assure that they’ll get the treatment or remain compliant with their doctor’s orders by taking their medication. So I applaud the House for taking up these critical reforms.”

Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, is a member of the Senate Judiciary and Finance Committees.

Houston-based Johnson Development Corp. is the area’s busiest, with more projects on a recently released list of most active communities than any other developer.

Johnson Development had six communities on the list, released by the Houston Business Journal, including the No. 1 development, Riverstone. Other Johnson communities listed are Sienna Plantation, No. 2; Woodforest, No. 4; Cross Creek Ranch, No. 6; Harvest Green, No. 8; and Harmony, No. 11. Projects were ranked according to their annual new home starts for the 12-month period ending in September.

“Builders have confidence in Johnson Development, as evidenced by the more than 2,100 homes they started in the six communities on the most-active list,” said Doug Goff, Chief Operating Officer for the company. “We have a long history of creating desirable communities that offer a prime location, top schools and impressive amenities that combine for a vibrant development where people want to live.”

Projects of Johnson Development are often ranked among the nation’s top-selling. Most recently, four developments were listed among the best-selling communities in the United States, according to a mid-year report released this summer by Robert Charles Lesser & Co. (RCLCO). Johnson Development was the only developer to have that many communities ranked among the 30 top-selling developments.

Johnson Development has 14 communities under active development in Houston. The company is also developing Viridian and Trinity Falls in Dallas-Fort Worth and Lake Arrowhead in Atlanta. Learn more at www.johnsondevelopment.com.
