Dee Koch of The George Foundation (center) with YIP participants and one of their projects. A table and chairs painted by the students was auctioned at Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s Secret Garden Gala in May to raise money to support its programs for abused and neglected children in Fort Bend County.

Child Advocates of Fort Bend earned a $1,500 Leadership of Excellence Award from The George Foundation for their participation and involvement with the Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) Program. The Award was given out at their recent Investment in Youth Luncheon.  The 2015 YIP program enabled 162 junior and senior high school students from 23 schools in Fort Bend County to learn the role that volunteering and philanthropy play in building a better community for all.

YIP teams implement volunteer projects with the assistance of local nonprofit organizations, allowing students to discover the important role that the nonprofit sector plays in the community. The partnership between YIP teams and the nonprofit sector also allows students to enter into the philanthropic mode by measuring their new knowledge and experience in volunteering to determine grant awards to be presented to participating nonprofits at the completion of the program. YIP has been in existence since 1997 and has been a community partnership with the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Fort Bend County school districts, local businesses and the community-at-large.

About Child Advocates of Fort Bend:

Child Advocates of Fort Bend is a non-profit agency dedicated to ending child abuse by providing a voice, healing the hurt, and breaking the cycle of child abuse in Fort Bend County. Through its Court Appointed Special Advocates Program (CASATM), Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) and more than 200 trained community volunteer advocates, Child Advocates improves the lives of more than 400 children each month and has served more than 12,600 children since opening its doors in 1991. Volunteers are needed to help in the agency’s Children’s Advocacy Center and in the Court Appointed Special Advocates Program. Cornyn: Democrat Pledge to Shut Down Senate Leaves Americans Vulnerable To Cyber Attacks

‘While our nation’s public servants are having their personal, sensitive personal information stolen, the Democratic leader led nearly all of his colleagues to block sensible bipartisan legislation that was focused on that specific threat.’

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)

WASHINGTON – In remarks on the Senate floor today, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) criticized Senate Democrats for blocking a bipartisan cybersecurity amendment, even in light of reports millions of federal employees had their sensitive personal information stolen by hackers.

Excerpts of Sen. Cornyn’s remarks are below, and his full speech can be viewed here.

“You would have thought this amendment, dealing as it did with cybersecurity, was a good place to park this on the Defense Authorization bill, as important a role as cybersecurity plays in our national security. And, of course, the purpose was to help the government and private businesses work together to protect Americans’ personal information and their privacy, which is a pretty straightforward goal. Protecting the personal information of the American people is really, really important and it was noncontroversial.”

“While our nation’s public servants are having their personal, sensitive personal information stolen, the Democratic leader led nearly all of his colleagues to block sensible bipartisan legislation that was focused on that specific threat, and which would provide for greater information sharing between the private sector and government in order to address this very problem.”

“The American people have rejected this idea that the United States Senate and the United States Congress should do nothing. They did that last November during the election. They made crystal clear that they wanted their elected representatives, whether in the House or the Senate, to come here to Washington on their behalf and to actually take steps to make their lives better and to work on their behalf, not to use this chamber for partisan political games.”

“Unfortunately, the leadership on the other side of the aisle is using these very same troops, who put their lives on the line every day, to score a few partisan points and to leverage their insatiable appetite for tax dollars.” “I hope our friends across the aisle will listen to the American people instead of their misguided leadership. Over the past few months, under Republican majorities, this chamber has demonstrated that we’re willing to work across the aisle to get the Senate functioning again for the American people.”

“I hope we can keep the Senate working and avoid this ‘Filibuster Summer.’” “I know the people of my state expect me to come up here and represent their interests, and I know all of our constituents expect us to do better by them.” Senator John Cornyn, a Republican from Texas, is a member of the Senate Judiciary and Finance Committees.

The Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer Safety Law

Statement of Robin Schneider, Executive Director of Texas Campaign for the Environment on the Signing of HB 942 – the Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer Safety Law

thekatynews-logo-400 Slightly more than two years ago, the town of West suffered a terrible preventable accident when an ammonium nitrate fertilizer facility blew up killing 15 people and injuring scores more. Thankfully, Governor Abbott signed House Bill 942 today which can help prevent tragedies such as the one in West.

Texas Campaign for the Environment generated hundreds of letters from Texans in support of HB 942 and helped mobilize West residents in support of the bill. We congratulate State Rep. Kyle Kacal and State Senator Brian Birdwell for their work on this law, as well as West Mayor Tommy Muska and other local leaders who worked for its passage.

We are fully aware, however, that Texans face many other threats from facilities that manufacture, transport and store dangerous chemicals. We hope that the Governor and State Legislature will work to prevent other disasters and protect the lives, health and property of Texas residents.

Attends press conference in support of Military Justice Improvement Act

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following today’s vote on the Military Justice Improvement Act amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) joined Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) at a press conference today in support of the measure. The amendment required 60 votes to pass and was not agreed to by a vote of 50-49. Highlights of Sen. Cruz’s remarks are below and may be viewed here.

“There are not many issues that bring together a bipartisan coalition like this. But this is an issue on which we are united. Two Congresses in a row, a majority of the Senate has voted for change. This [legislation] will pass,” Sen. Cruz said.

“There are two objectives, both of which are important, one: preserving good order and discipline in the military. And two: protecting our servicemen and women from sexual assault. These principles are not in tension; they’re in harmony. When our young men and young women are subjected to sexual assault, it undermines good order and justice….

“Our soldiers, and sailors, and airmen, and our marines are brave patriots who voluntarily stand up and say they will risk life and limb to defend our nation. But they don’t sign up to be the victims of rape, they don’t sign up to be the victims of sexual assault, and we have a solemn obligation to protect them, to put in place a military justice system that protects every single fighting man and woman.”

Reforming Texas Guardianship Laws

thekatynews-logo-400 The HPRA speaker this Friday noon will be Debby Valdez, director of GRADE, the Guardianship Reform Advocates for the Disabled & Elderly. Ms. Valdez will inform us as to how Texas guardianship law violates the 14th amendment, as it allows guardians to strip estates of all assets and leave elderly citizens who are not incompetent destitute, and yet makes it very hard for them to prove otherwise. This is another case of well-intentioned law being manipulated by those in power to serve their interests. The system has become, says our speaker, “a scam.”

Debby will be assisted by local advocate for the elderly, Sam Perlin.

femaAUSTIN, Texas – The federal disaster declaration for Texas has been expanded to include Individual Assistance for seven additional counties as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that began May 4, according to the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The seven Texas counties newly designated for Individual Assistance are: Cooke, Dallas, Fannin, Grayson, Liberty, Nueces, and Walker. They join 23 counties already designated for Individual Assistance: Bastrop, Blanco, Caldwell, Denton, Eastland, Fort Bend, Gaines, Guadalupe, Harris, Hays, Henderson, Hidalgo, Johnson, Milam, Montague, Navarro, Rusk, Smith, Travis, Wichita, Williamson, Wise and Van Zandt.  Residents in the now 30 designated counties are eligible to apply for state and federal assistance.

Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for rent, temporary housing and home repairs, as well as other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs.

Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also are available. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.

Texans who had storm damage should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but under-insured applicants may receive help after their insurance claims have been settled.

Residents and business owners should apply right away with SBA as part of the overall federal disaster recovery process, and not wait for insurance claims to settle.

People can apply for FEMA assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call 800-621-3362 toll free from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (local time) daily until further notice. Multilingual operators are available.

Disaster assistance applicants who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY should call 800-462-7585 directly; for those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS), call   800-621-3362.
